ICC’s Newcomer Skills Accelerator Program has partnered with organizations across Canada to give volunteers incredible opportunities where they can build on skills and add Canadian experience to their resumes. And thanks to our volunteers’ hard work, we have the chance to continue building on this program.

Giulia Cocco, a dedicated volunteer, joined the Newcomer Skills Accelerator Program at its initial launch! She has since volunteered in various spaces and shared her remarkable experiences with us. After volunteering with East and West Learning Connections (EAWLC) in Toronto, Ontario, and Telus Spark Science Centre in Calgary, Alberta, Giulia’s journey will show you why volunteering is so valuable!

Giulia’s motivation to volunteer at Telus Spark Science Centre stemmed from her background in science and her passion for working with children. Her previous community work involved engaging with kids, making this opportunity a perfect fit.

While pursuing another opportunity, Giulia’s involvement with EAWLC was born from a desire to learn more about herself as a newcomer to Canada. She sought a place that celebrated diverse cultures and stories, making EAWLC the ideal choice as this organization provides workshops in a number of areas and mentoring opportunities to ensure people from all backgrounds can connect with one another and learn everything they can to succeed.

Giulia initially joined the Newcomer Skills Accelerator Program without serious expectations. However, her volunteer journey exceeded any and all hopes, introducing her to organizations she might not have discovered otherwise.

Personal Growth and Learning

Giulia’s volunteering experiences have been transformational. She recalls a life-changing encounter with a stranger who emphasized the importance of pursuing one’s dreams. These words became her mantra, helping her overcome new challenges and self-doubt.

At TELUS Spark, Giulia discovered inspiration in a younger individual who showed that personal growth knows no age limits. This encounter, then, ignited a fire within her, compelling her to work harder and believe more deeply in her own potential.

Giulia encourages potential volunteers to embrace the opportunity, emphasizing that committing 120 hours to a cause you care about can be incredibly rewarding. Finding a place where you truly enjoy your time will make the hours fly by, leading to valuable connections and cherished memories.

Giulia’s volunteer experiences stand as a testament to the positive impact one person can have when committed to making a difference. Her journey serves as an inspiration to anyone considering volunteering to enrich both their lives and their communities. So, why wait? Join Giulia on this fulfilling adventure today!
