ICC’s Newcomer Skills Accelerator Program has partnered with organizations across Canada to give volunteers the opportunity to challenge themselves and enhance their skill set in Canadian workplaces. And thanks to our volunteers’ hard work, we have the chance to continue building on this program.

Dahin volunteers at Scarborough Health Network (SHN) as a Non-Clinical Advocate, primarily helping patients and visitors by guiding them to specific departments, assisting during seminars or meetings, and coordinating various tasks within the hospital.

With a focus on innovation, collaboration, and community engagement, Scarborough Health Network strives to enhance the health and well-being of its patients and their loved ones. The network provides a wide range of medical services, including emergency care, surgical procedures, maternity services, and specialized programs to meet the evolving healthcare needs of the community.

Dahin has a background in psychology and finds fulfillment in assisting individuals within the hospital. It can be a scary space for patients and care givers, so practicing empathy in these halls makes a challenging day a little bit easier with the help of a friendly face answering your questions. Being able to provide support and guidance to those in need resonates deeply with Dahin’s desire to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.

The hospital setting is bustling with activities, but also provides Dahin with numerous learning opportunities. Despite the busy nature, the joy derived from assisting others overshadowed any challenges. One particular experience that Dahin had was assisting an older lady in a wheelchair. She helped the patient complete her registration, accompanied her to the department, and waited until she finished her consultation. Dahin also arranged a cab for her in the end. Her gratitude for Dahin’s support was evident as they said their goodbyes.

Dahin mentioned that volunteering at SHN has been instrumental in enhancing her cultural understanding and adaptability. It has honed her skills in empathizing with diverse individuals and taught her the significance of providing moral support in challenging situations, which will greatly benefit Dahin’s career progression in healthcare.

Dahin’s advice for those who may feel nervous about getting started on volunteering is to embrace the experience wholeheartedly. Be prepared to learn, adapt, and offer your support to those in need. The sense of fulfillment from making a difference is immeasurable. It will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on both you and those you assist.

“Embrace every beginning as an opportunity for personal growth. Face the challenges head-on, as they will ultimately contribute to your development. Your journey as a volunteer will lead you to your destination.”
