Tareq Hadhad
Originally from Damascus, Syria, the Hadhad family were making and distributing chocolate for nearly 30 years. In 2012, this all changed. Like many others in Syria, a bombing destroyed their home and factory forcing them to flee to Lebanon. After three years as refugees, they moved to Canada where they began to rebuild their lives in Antigonish, Nova Scotia.
Fast forward and 2016 was the year when Peace by Chocolate would be founded! With support from the community in Antigonish, the company has grown into a national brand selling across the country.
The name Peace by Chocolate represents the Hadhad family’s belief in the power of peace and their desire to promote unity through their chocolate creations. Their mission is to spread happiness, positivity, and love, using chocolate as a delicious medium.
In finding success, the Hadhad family has also founded a charitable organization that returns a percentage of the profits back to the community. Through the Peace on Earth Society, partnerships can be built with like-minded organizations that work towards peace while also removing the suffering we see around the world.

Inspiring Others
The Hadhads’ journey and the message behind Peace by Chocolate have inspired many people around the world. Their story showcases the resilience and determination of refugees and the positive impact they can have on their adopted communities.
The story inspired filmmaker Jonathan Keijser to share this story as a movie! Sharing the strength and success of the Hadhad family shines a bright light for refugees and immigrants who are building their new lives around the world.
With director, Hatem Ali, who also played Tareq Hadhad’s father, Assam, using authentic voices to share this story was a major priority. This film was made to uplift newcomers and neighbours, alike, so that everybody in the community can find pride in one another’s greatest acheivements.

What is the secret ingredient?
